  • The 100 Fold Return

Luke 8:8 "...But others fell on good soil and grew; and it produced a hundred times more grain"

Luke 8:15 "...But as for the seed that landed on the good soil, these are the ones, who after hearing the word, CLING to it with an honest and good heart and bear fruit with steadfast endurance."

The final post in this series brings us the final character in the parable; the good soil.  Good soil is rich.  Rich meaning that its full of the life giving minerals that are required for a solid environment for the seed to take root and grow.

Good soil is soft.  It has been plowed, tilled and lightly watered for the seed to go down deep under the surface.  As we can see from the previous studies that Jesus is comparing the soil of the ground to the heart of an individual.  Simple as can be, but there are a few keys to receiving a spiritual harvest in abundance in your life.  One is to cultivate a soft heart towards the word of God.  Two, Jesus says, is to CLING to the word of God with an honest and good heart.  Third, it takes steadfast endurance to see the word of God take root and come to fruition in your life.  Don't give up, have patience and continue to believe by faith that you have what God said you would have and it
will bear fruit in your life...if you can endure.  If you can prevent your heart from becoming hard.  If you can ward off the birds of distraction and devastation and if you can guard yourself from the worries and cares of life that choke the seed.  If God can get the right environment in your heart for the seed to grow, he guarantees a hundred fold return.  Now that's a lot of fruit!  Stay tuned for my new upcoming blog.  I'll be switching over to Wordpress in the next couple weeks with a whole new look and feel to the site.  I'll also be changing the name.  I'll keep ya posted!

  • You are what you DIGEST.

Luke 8:7 "...other seed it fell among thorns, and they grew up and it choked them."

Luke 8:14 "...as for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go along their way they are choked by the worries, the riches and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does not mature."

You've heard of the phrase "You are what you eat?"  Well, its not true.  You are what you DIGEST.  The word of God has potential to change your life, however if the seed doesn't germinate it will not bear fruit.  Germination of the word of God is something that the enemy is truly against.  Someone said that if the devil can't attack you he'll just wear you out.  This is the essence of this scripture revealing to us a few of the tools the enemy uses to wear us out, whip us and prevent the seed from maturing.  He uses worry, riches and pleasures of this life to choke the life of God (Zoe Life) from us.  Worry is a form of negative meditation.  What is the dominate thought you think on during your day?  Jesus gave us advice not to worry, why?  Because he loves us and will not allow anything to come our way that he has not sifted first.  We must learn to trust instead of worry.  We must learn to believe instead of doubt.  We must learn to walk in faith instead of fear.  Its vital to the growth of the seed.  The enemy will also use riches and pleasures of this life to choke the seed.  Whats wrong with riches?  Well, nothing.  Money is not evil or good in it of itself.  In fact we need money as a tool to get things done.  However, if you make money your god it will choke you.  Ever know anyone who was drowning in money?  Look at our economy in its current state.  Its a perfect example of how money, riches and pleasures of life can choke you and prove to be a snare.  Use your riches for the glory of God's kingdom.  Moderate the pleasures you seek to restrict your flesh.  Let the word of God richly dwell in your heart.  Allow it to grow, mature, have room, have moisture and bear fruit.

  • No Fruit, No Root

Withered_by_harmonious_madness Luke 8:6 "Other seed fell on rock, and when it came up it withered because it had no moisture."

Luke 8:13 "Those on the rock are the ones who received the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root.  They believe for a while, but in a time of testing they fall away."

Have you ever heard the saying "no fruit, no root?" The seed must be planted in the right environment in order for it to first take root, then flourish and eventually bear fruit. We can see from other scriptures that Jesus is obviously interested in fruit. He cursed a fig tree out of season for not doing so! Why is there no fruit? Simply because there is no root. The root is the part of the plant that no one sees. During my environmental science class that I took last summer I found out what it meant to have a deep root. We were given the assignment of plucking out of the ground nasty mustard weed that would decorate itself around Judson campus. This weed is foreign to our midwest soil and particularly damaging to the local oak trees. Its a small plant, but in order to kill it you must pluck it up from its root. Some of the weeds were easy to tear out because they were babies and had no roots formed. Others, well lets just say they had been there a while. They were hard to pull out because they had really large root systems. Those on the rock are the ones that receive the word of God with joy, but don't stand the test of time. And time will test you. Being a Christian is not for the swift, but for those who endure. When all else fails in your life, when you don't see the results you would like to see will you still believe? Will you still walk by faith and not by sight? The root is buried deep underground. Your success in life will largely determine how strong your roots are. You need room to grow, you need a soil thats rich and you need moisture of the Holy Spirit to saturate your spirit man. Don't be tricked. The rocky soil is a mixture of dirt and rocks. It may be received with joy, but get those rocks out before the time of testing comes and the plant withers up.

  • Earthquake in Italy

Lord we pray for those in Italy right now who have experienced such an earth shaking event. Lord we ask that you will comfort the families of those who have passed away in this tragedy and that you will bring glory to yourself. We pray for the true church in Italy to rise up in this hour. To be strong and to have courage to step up to the challenge to care for those homeless and surviving.  Lord we pray that those who do not know you would come to repentance and true saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as savior and Lord over all.  King Jesus you truly reign over every nation of this earth.  We pray against any aftershocks the enemy may try and bring forth concerning this event.  We pray that looting will be prevented and chaos will be restored to civility and that the government of God will rule in Italy Lord Jesus.  We pray for the church leaders and those in government, that Lord you would give them the power, insight and wisdom to deal with infrastructure and civilian needs in this hour. Oh Lord heal those who have been afflicted, heal their wounds Lord both in body and heart.  The hearts of many are shaken Lord.  Hear us O God.  Reach down and bring revival to Italy.  Bring them back to their true love.  Bring Rome back to her true destiny as a strong church, full of the Holy Spirits power.  Thank you Lord for fulfilling your word to us.  That you never leave us, nor forsake us and that you love us and love Italy.

    Amen.

  • Breaking Ground In the Spirit

    The Path

Luke 8.18 "...and some seed fell on the path, and were trampled on, and the wild birds came to devour it"

Continuing in our look at the parable of the soils we turn our attention to the first condition of the soil, hard ground. We have previously looked at the characters in place: the farmer, the seed and the birds.  Again take note that the focus of the parable is the soils.  Jesus later goes on to explain, in private, to his disciples that the types of soils are the various conditions of men's hearts.  Note the seed is constant, but the condition of the heart is what changes and what needs to change.  The first attempt to plant the seed falls upon a path.  The path is symbolic of the unplowed ground of the heart of mankind.  People's hearts have to be plowed by the Holy Spirit before they can properly even begin to recieve the Word of God in to their hearts.  He is the one who convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgement. John 16:8. Often times peoples hearts have been trampled on through other means which has made that ground hard to penetrate.  They have been walked on, beat up, filled with broken promises and constatly bruised.  This is a heart that needs extra attention and prayer. For ONLY PRAYER can break up this ground in the heart of an unbeliever. Jesus gives us the result of the farmer trying to sow seed on this ground.  It gets trampled.  This is how you will know if someone is ready to recieve Christ or not.  Does the words you say to them get trampled on or do they get recieved?  Be careful who you invest in.  They may not be able or ready to recieve the Word of God into thier hearts.  In some cases, this can do more damage than good.  We cannot see the hearts of men, only God knows people's hearts, but we must be sensitive to the Holy Spirit to know when our words are being recieved or if they are just bouncing right off the ground.  Soon enough the birds will begin to fly up over head to devour the seed that has been sown.

  • Does the Devil Know God's Word Better Than You?

    __VULTURES_AND_TREES___by_goodlittlesquid

    Birds

We've only just begun digging into the parable of the soils.  First we talked about the seed, how the seed speaks of the "potential" of the Word of God.  God is responsible for His word, how ever we are responsible for bringing that word into being.  Next we talked about the farmer and how its both our job to "scatter" the seed and also to look for opportunity to sow into fertile ground.  Today, I'll touch on the subject of the third character in the parable: the birds.  For the sake of not giving the devil any credit, we will keep this section short and to the point. Jesus clearly reveals to us that the birds are the devil coming to snatch up the Word that is scattered on the path. We should not be ignorant of satans devices and plans.  He is not after your quiet time.  He is not trying to steal your money or drink all the gas in your car leaving you on "e".  He is there to snatch the Word of God from your life.  Satan knows the Word of God probably better than you and I.  He is after the seed, which if planted in good ground will produce a harvest. THAT is what he is afraid of.  Sure you can go to church meetings.  Go ahead and lift your hands and sing some songs, he has no problem with that. But let the Word of God dwell richly in you and begin to bear some plump juicy fruit...oh that is a cause for concern! So he sends the birds (also possibly demon spirits) to come and snatch the Word of God from your life.  It could come in the form of doubt.  I could come in the form of American Idol.  It could manifest as a new relationship that suddenly comes your way to distract you from your destiny.  Either way, the main goal of the enemy is to render believers powerless.  Surely we are powerless without the Word of God bearing fruit in our lives.  Do you see any birds over head today?

  • Become a Broadcaster

    The Farmer

Jesus said the Farmer went out and scattered some seed.  Another word for 'scatter' is broadcast.  When a farmer plants his seed in the Spring, he usually will plant more than normal because he anticipates that not every seed is going to be a productive plant.  So they 'scatter' their seed by taking a handful of the seed and tossing it across the plot of land.  They broadcast their seed. I found out that on one acre of land a farmer could possibly plant 31,000-35,000 plants!  Oh Lord that God would grant us a harvest of souls of such magnitude!  And he will yet the harvest will not come unless the seed is first planted.  The farmer is the vessel in which God uses to scatter the seed of the Word of God.  There are two parts concerning the farmer in this parable that I'd like to highlight.  They both kind of contrast each other, but we can receive them both one in the same.  Number one, the job of the farmer is to scatter his/her seed.  That's it, period.  It is not our job to make the seed grow, push it down deep or even to water and put light on it (the rain and sun will do that naturally).  No, it is our job as the farmer to take a BIG HANDFUL of the Word of God and cast it upon the plot of land God has given us responsibility over.  Some may fall here, some may fall there...to the farmer it doesn't matter.  Or does it?  Secondly, if we look at the conditions in which a seed will best grow we find in this parable that it will be best planted in fertile soil.  (We will discuss that later)  A wise farmer will make sure the soil is fertile, soft and good ground for which to sow his seed in.  So both principles can be put into practice.  In on sense, sometimes we are not able to see the condition of people's hearts, therefore it is simply our job to broadcast the seed and let it fall where it may.  In another sense, a wise farmer looks for opportunities to maximize his valuable seed to produce the greatest harvest for him.  The question I have for you today is 'are you broadcasting' or are you selectively picking and choosing your opportunities to sow the Word of God into people's lives?  Go out today and sow liberally!

  • Everlasting Gobstoppers

    seed The Seed

Lets begin with the seed in this parable. The seed is probably the most important element.  Jesus says plainly, it is the Word of God.  First lesson: words are seed, why?  Because words contain the power of life in them. (or death)  Ever say something you wish you could take back?  Its as if what you said takes on a life of its own and produces a whole chain reaction of results. Its because words are really spirit and carry in them the power to bring change...especially the Word coming from the mouth of God.  Now, why would Jesus compare the Word of God to seed?  Because the Word of God is a seed that needs to be planted.  However, as we will later see, the condition of the environment in which the seed is planted will determine the result. The seed is a symbol of potential.  Bill Johnson (pastor of Bethel Church in Redding, CA http://www.billjohnsonministries.com) said something one time that really stuck out to me: "God is responsible for his word (seed), but he is not completely responsible for it reaching its potential."  There are various factors that determine the growth of the seed. We work in cooperation with the Word of God to see it come to fruition in our life.

Secondly, notice in this parable the seed remains the same.  God's word never changes, it never passes away and in fact will remain forever. It is consistent, it is sure, it is trusted to perform what it was sent forth to do...but here in this parable Jesus is giving the CONDITIONS under which the seed will or will not grow. 1 Peter says we are born again by the "incorruptible" seed of the Word of God.  The problem is not with the seed...if we are not seeing growth, two things. One, are you under the scattering of the seed?  Are you taking the time to position yourself where you are allowing the Word of God to be scattered upon your heart?  Two, check the soil.

  • Does God Hide Things From You?

     Seed_for_the_Harvest_by_jordannb

    Luke 8: 4-15

This parable amazes me every time I read it. Lets just give a short breakdown of the parable:Characters: Farmer, Birds of the air, Seed. Types of soils: Path, Rocky, Thorns, Fertile.

First of all, what blows me away is that Jesus PURPOSELY hid the meaning of the parable from large groups of people. Why would he do that you might ask?  Jesus knew that revelation given to children would be dangerous. Only those who were hungry enough to pull from the throne of heaven would qualify to get understanding and wisdom of kingdom principles.  This goes to show you that God not only cares about the end result, but also about the process.  He wants to see how desperate you are. How hungry are you to not only know Him, but know his WAYS. It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, it is the glory of kings to search it out.  Secondly, he TELLS the small group of disciples the meaning in plain english.  (The secrets of the kingdom of God are not revealed to just anyone.)  Seeing that this is such a large parable, I'm going to spend the next few days touching on in detail each aspect of the parable beginning with the seed and then ending with the fertile soil. Stay tuned and I hope you get something out of these short lessons.

  • "Wisdom shouts in the street, she lifts up her voice in the square" Proverbs 1:20

Wisdom is knowledge applied. Sometimes we think a person is wise because of their profound words, however true wisdom is more than words. True wisdom actually has nothing to do with words at all.  Wisdom is acquiring the knowledge of a thing and then having the practical ability to be able to carry it out.  For example, its one thing to have a lot of knowledge about God.  Its another thing to actually know God himself.  Jesus had a major problem with these types of people. Religion is never able to produce a true demonstration of the kingdom of God.  It has the appearance of wisdom, but is void of any real practical application.  It puts rules on people, but doesn't lift a finger to remove the burden. Another thing sometimes we mistake wisdom for is fear.  Fear often masquerades itself as "wisdom".  We use "wisdom" as an excuse for our lack of faith or inability to be able to practically produce the fruit from the tree of God's wisdom. Thats why its so important to have encounters with God.  If we lack experiences with God in our church meetings or even in our individual relationships with God then we are in danger of deception.  "Virtual church" as one person put it.  Get wisdom, (get experience) above all things get understanding.
